UV-C Light Sanitization:

How Does It Work?

First things first: What is UV-C light, and how does it sanitize items? If you're new to selling this product category, have no fear. We're breaking down the basics so you can explain this innovative technology to your clients and answer any questions they might have.

What is UV-C light?

Light Spectrum chart

UV light is a form of light that exists beyond the electromagnetic spectrum between X-rays and visible light. It's not visible to the naked eye and lies just beyond the violet end of the spectrum (hence the name "ultraviolet," derived from "beyond violet").

There are three types of UV light: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. UV-C light exists in the wavelength range between 200-280 nanometers (NM) and is the type of UV light used for germicidal activity. Unlike the other UV rays that you might associate with sunburns, this type of UV light is absorbed in our atmosphere, therefore it is only available via man-made means, such as lamps or lights.

How does UV-C light kill germs?

Before and After dna with UV Photon diagram

UV-C light inactivates microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, which prevents them from performing vital cellular functions. Germs and pathogens are left unable to reproduce and simply die off instead of reproducing inside a host to continue its spread. Essentially, UV-C light stops germs and bacteria in their tracks and renders them useless and unable to infect others.

Where else is UV-C light used?

While this technology might seem futuristic, UV-C light has actually been broadly used since the mid-20th century across a range of industries, thanks to its efficient sterilization capabilities. Some common uses outside of the promo world include:

How long does it take to sanitize an object or surface?

While you can used UVClean devices for as long as you'd like, a minimum of 2 minutes is recommended to reach a kill rate of nearly 100%.

Note: The UVClean Qi has a built-in timer that will turn the UV-C light off once the device is fully sanitized.

What's the recommended distance to sanitize an
object or surface?

For best results, the UVClean light should be held half an inch or less from the object or surface being sanitized. The further away from the object, the longer time it will take to reach a maximum kill rate.

What is the surface area that the UVClean LED light covers?

The average coverage area for these devices is 2" x 2" when held half an inch away from the object or surface.

Are there any recommended safety precautions for use?

UV light devices must be used properly to ensure safety. Direct exposure to bare skin and eyes should be avoided at all times, as the UV light can cause a sunburn-like reaction to skin or retinas. However, UV light is easily absorbed and inactivated by clothing, plastic or glass.
